 A Papillon cooker in Chad
|
Cordination: Jürgen Marquardt, Vechta (Germany)
In the Working Group "PapiTchad" several NGO's are collaborating in the fields of development and environmental protection. The aim is to make solar cooking available to the Chadian population in order to counteract the overexploitation of wood resources and their harmful consequences.
Papillon means "butterfly" in French and refers to the form of the solar cooker we propose. The Papillon was developed in the Solar Institute in Jülich, Germany, by Dipl. Ing. Jochen Dessel and corresponds to a list of desiderata by women in Burkina Faso. The Papillon has been successfully introduced in Burkina Faso and is the type of solar cooker we consider as the first choice for family use.
In March 2004 a Papillon construction course for craftsmen was organized in Chad with the help of six German NGO's. A Chadian instructor has also been formed to train craftsmen. He will instruct a new course in January 2005 in the capital N'Djamena in collaboration with the Chadian Association of Volunteers for Progress and the Environment (Association Tchadienne des Volontaires pour le Progrès et l'Environnement, ATVPE).
Our aim is to mobilize resources to help launch the production and promotion of solar cookers - especially of the Papillon type - and to evaluate results.
